Ruth Kirchner is a freelance communications consultant and journalist. She advises MERICS on its international communications strategy and edits English-language publications, and she produces the MERICS podcast series. Kirchner reported from China from 2005 to 2015, the last five years as correspondent and Beijing bureau chief of ARD, Germany’s public radio network. She moved to China from London where she was a senior broadcast journalist and duty editor at BBC World Service (1994-2005). She started her career in journalism at a regional newspaper in the German town of Kassel. 


The  Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS)is a Stiftung Mercatorinitiative. Established in 2013, MERICS is a Berlin-based institute for contemporary and practical research into China.
