Akio Takahara is Professor of Contemporary Chinese Politics at the Graduate School of Law and Politics, The University of Tokyo. His publications include The Politics of Wage Policy in Post-Revolutionary China, (Macmillan, 1992). He served as President of the Japan Association for Asian Studies (2009-11), and as Secretary-General of the New Japan-China Friendship 21st Century Committee (2009-14). He received his DPhil in 1988 from Sussex University, and later served as visiting scholar at the Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong, the Japanese Embassy in Beijing, Harvard University, and at Peking University.

The  Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS)is a Stiftung Mercatorinitiative. Established in 2013, MERICS is a Berlin-based institute for contemporary and practical research into China.
