Carsten Holz is professor of economics in the Social Science Division at the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology. His field of research is the Chinese economy, in particular issues of economic development and growth in China. His current research focuses on the process of economic development in West Sichuan. He is one of the internationally most renowned experts on Chinese statistics. Publications include monographs on financial sector reform and state-owned enterprise reform, and journal articles on economic policy implementation in China, monetary policy and rural finance, quality of Chinese statistics, economic fragmentation and growth in China, the production of data on the Chinese economy (comparable prices across provinces, capital stock series, monthly industrial output data), and the development of institutions of wage determination.


The  Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS)is a Stiftung Mercatorinitiative. Established in 2013, MERICS is a Berlin-based institute for contemporary and practical research into China.
