MERICS Internship Programme

About us

The Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS) is a Stiftung Mercator initiative. Established in 2013, MERICS is a Berlin-based institute for contemporary and practical research into China that Stiftung Mercator set up as a central forum for engagement with China in Germany, thereby laying the foundations for people – especially decision-makers in Germany and Europe – to better judge questions and issues relating to China.

MERICS Internship Programme

MERICS is continually looking for committed and flexible team players to contribute as full-time interns (40 hours per week) to its research programmes.

Our interns apply and expand the skills acquired during their studies to a dynamic working environment, contributing to independent policy-oriented research on China.

Internships at MERICS have a duration of three months and are offered at four different times throughout the year, starting either in January, April, July or October. Interns receive a small remuneration.

MERICS offers the opportunity for interns:

  • to contribute to independent policy-oriented research on China, aimed at providing insight to the broader public, political decision-makers, business and society
  • to be part of a dynamic and highly dedicated team
  • to apply and expand the skills you have acquired during your studies, by conducting research based on English and Chinese primary sources, performing data analysis and writing short reports, as well as assisting in preparing events and presentations

MERICS expects:

  • studies in Political Science, Sociology, Economics, or Area Studies with a relevant focus
  • good knowledge of the political and economic system of the People’s Republic of China
  • a very good command of written and spoken English and good Chinese language skills. A working knowledge of the German language would be a bonus
  • strong attention to detail and a high degree of reliability
  • proficient use of Microsoft Office (especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint)

How to apply:

Your application should include a letter of motivation (one page) and your curriculum vitae. Please clearly indicate the time slot you would like to be considered for (start date in January, April, July or October). State your preference as to which MERICS research programmes you would particularly like to make a contribution to.

Please send your application in one single PDF document (your name should be in the document title) at least two months before your preferred starting date to our internship programme coordinator Sabine Mokry. The cut-off date for applications is two months before the first day of the respective internship slot.
