China's global law enforcement drive

The need for a European response

International law enforcement cooperation has become an important tool of Chinese foreign and security policy. A growing number of European countries have concluded extradition and mutual legal assistance treaties with China. Cooperation with China is a necessity, but it could challenge international legal norms and definitions.

As long as China's legal system does not guarantee basic rights such as access to a fair trial and as long as China persecutes political dissidents or ethnic minorities by charging them with economic crimes or terrorism, Western governments have to insist on strong safeguards.

The China Monitor “China's global law enforcement drive: the need for a European response” by MERICS experts Thomas EderBertram Lang and Moritz Rudolf, urges European governments to coordinate their response.
