Michael Schaefer is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the BMW Stiftung Herbert Quandt. Prior to taking on this position, he served as Germany’s Ambassador to the People's Republic of China from 2007 to 2013. Between 2002 and 2007, he was the Political Director of the Federal Foreign Office. From 1999 to 2002, he was head of the Western Balkans Task Force and subsequently Deputy Political Director and Special Envoy for Southeast Europe at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin. Schaefer is the author of numerous articles and monographs on foreign and security policy issues. He is honorary professor at the China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing. He also sits on the advisory boards of the Mannheim & Tongji Executive MBA Program, the International and Security Affairs Centre (ISAC), and serves as a member of the German Group of the Trilateral Commission. Schaefer studied law in Munich, Geneva, and Heidelberg where he passed his Second State Examination in Law in 1978.
