The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is a core element of a more pro-active Chinese foreign policy. In 2013, president Xi Jinping formulated China's new vision of connectivity in Eurasia. From an economic perspective, China hopes that the development of new trade routes, markets and energy resources will benefit its own economy and reduce dependencies. An equally important goal of BRI is to help China take a leading role in establishing a multipolar world order.
