Deutsche China-Politik – Quo vadis?

During her time in office, Chancellor Merkel strengthened diplomatic ties with China through regular visits, brought economic cooperation to the foreground and addressed sensitive issues behind the scenes. How will Germany's China policy develop after the Merkel era? How can channels of communication be maintained even in difficult times? Are there signs of cooperation on the horizon, or will confrontation define the future of  relations between Germany and China?

Ahead of the German-Chinese government consultation, we discussed these questions in a MERICS web seminar featuring foreign policy experts from four parliamentary groups in the German Bundestag. The event was held in German.

Introduction: Mikko Huotari, Director MERICS

Panelists:

  • Bijan Djir-Sarai, Foreign Policy Spokesman for the FDP parliamentary group
  • Omid Nouripour, Foreign Policy Spokesman for the Green parliamentary group
  • Norbert Röttgen (CDU), Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Bundestag
  • Nils Schmid, Foreign Policy Spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group

Moderation:

  • Ariane Reimers, ARD correspondent and currently MERICS Senior Fellow
  • Claudia Wessling, Head of Communication and Publications at MERICS
