Frank N. Pieke joined MERICS as director and CEO in August 2018. Pieke (born in Amsterdam, 1957) studied cultural anthropology and Chinese studies at the University of Amsterdam and the University of California, Berkeley, where he received his Ph.D. in 1992. After lectureships in Leiden and Oxford, he was appointed chair professor in modern China studies at Leiden University in 2010.
Pieke’s current research revolves around the impact of China on Europe, foreign immigrant groups in China and the transformation of the Chinese Communist Party. His most recent books are The Good Communist (2009) and Knowing China (2016), both published by Cambridge University Press.
Pieke has a strong track record as researcher, opinion leader and institution builder. In Oxford he set up and directed the Oxford China Centre. Subsequently in Leiden he served as academic director of the Institute of Area Studies and as executive director of the Leiden Asia Centre. He has conducted numerous consultancy and externally funded projects and is regularly involved in discussions on contemporary China in the media, government and business.
