Founding president MERICS

Sebastian Heilmann is the founding president of the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS). He stood at the helm of the institute for five years. During this period, MERICS has established itself as a leading voice for research and policy advice on contemporary China. In 2018, he returned to the University of Trier as professor for the political economy of China.

Heilmann has published extensively on China’s political system, economic policy making and international relations. He has extensive experience providing advice to the German federal government and EU institutions. He regularly serves as a commentator for German and international media.
